A great Thai restaurant and also a sports bar? Count us in. Hoy-Ka has established itself as one of LA’s finest not only because of their excellent food, but also for having a space that’s different from everyone else’s. The wood-covered interior feels kind of like a tavern, and with plenty of TVs playing sports, you won’t have any trouble finding a reason to drink. The pad ka prao, with its fried egg-topped tower of white rice, is your order. FNUK fOX Intro
What is it that makes Ruen Pair so great? Many of its dishes aren’t one-of-a-kind standouts, and most Thai expats wouldn’t exactly call it the most authentic Thai experience they’ve ever encountered (provided, the restaurants that fit the bill in that department vastly vary). Perhaps, then, it’s the fact that their turnip omelette marries just the right hint of sweetness with savory in a way that makes it required ordering, or how the fragrant star anise and cinnamon-powered steam from a bowl of boat noodles naturally elicits a Pavlovian response.

Rodded is an all-around solid Thai restaurant, but if you aren’t here eating the duck noodle soup, you’re doing your life a disservice. This bowl of glory might not have the finest curb appeal of all time, but something about it hits every correct note possible. Rich, savory, and not in the least bit oily, this is one of the best single dishes in Thai Town. We also highly recommend getting the wontons for dipping. You also get to choose your own noodle to put into it, if freedom is something you get excited about. Mango Tree, Thai Restaurant London serving Authentic Thai Cuisine or Thai Food
Is there a better bowl of Thai soup noodles in Los Angeles than Rodded’s duck noodle soup? Tender slices of boneless, skin-on duck, a clean-yet-rich broth with just the right undertones of spice and firm egg noodles combine to make it a legitimate question. And Rodded isn’t a one-trick pony in the soup noodle department: Their beef noodle soup, with an equally refreshing broth is an in-house competitor that rivals the balance of savory, rich and spice in its gamier competitor.

I will admit that I am less expert in Thai cuisine than most of the other food styles I write about, but I have been to Thailand, and as the guest of the nation’s visitor board was taken by a gastronomically obsessed tourism official to a slate of his favorites to wow me with Thai cooking, and Nahm is better than anything I had in Bangkok, Phuket, Ko Samui, or any of the other places we visited. I’ve also eaten in this country’s most acclaimed Thai eateries, from New York to Las Vegas, and they can’t touch Nahm. FNUK fOX Intro

A kid takes over his parents’ family Thai restaurant on the Sunset Strip and turns it into the greatest Thai restaurant Los Angeles has. Tale as old as time, right? Hardly. What the people over at Night + Market (and its equally fantastic Silver Lake location) have been doing for the past few years is nothing short of incredible. The food is both traditional (grandma’s old recipes are still being used) and continuously pushing the envelope. And the atmosphere is one giant, beautiful party.

Sixty percent of the time, we want Thai takeout all the time. Thai food masterfully walks a delicate line between salty, spicy, sour, and sweet, perhaps no better demonstrated than in pad Thai. Undeniably the most ubiquitous and oft-ordered dish in American-Thai restaurants, it's perfection. From the slight funk of fish sauce to the peanutty topping to the just-a-little-chewy noodles to the fresh squeeze of lime juice brightening it all up… sorry, what were we saying? Oh, right. Pad Thai. While it's an American favorite, there are a lot of other sleeper hits waiting to be discovered on your local Thai takeout menu. We asked the chefs at our favorite Thai restaurants to ID the best dishes you're not ordering…yet. Best Thai Restaurant: Nahm Jim - Gordon Ramsay
This family-owned neighborhood spot at Pico-Robertson isn’t just on this list because the food is excellent. It’s on this list because it’s pretty romantic too. With white tablecloths and a glass-enclosed wine rack in the back, Si Laa has a more upscale feel than others on this list. Prices are still reasonable, the waitstaff is insanely friendly, and pat yourself on the back - you just nailed date night. The crispy duck and “hidden treasure” are must-orders. Here is a very quick Asian-style marinade for meat which you can use with any stir-fry. Place 2-3 Tbsp. soy sauce in a cup (use 3 Tbsp. for 1 1/2 cups sliced chicken, or 2 Tbsp. for 1 cup chicken). Add 2 tsp. cornstarch and stir until the cornstarch dissolves. Now pour this mixture over the sliced chicken. Stir to combine. Allow the chicken to marinate in this mixture until ready to use. Since it opened in the mid-’90s, Sripraphai has set the standard for New York’s real-deal Thai restaurants, marking the Woodside-Elmhurst area as the definitive Mecca and serving as a difficult-to-pronounce (it’s the owner’s first name) calling card for anyone who wants to show off what an adventurous and authenticity-seeking eater they are. If you expect to be treated as someone who knows the least bit about Thai food, the only answer to “Have you been to Sripraphai?” is a resounding “Yes.” The many-paged menu, with dishes both familiar and unusual from all over the country, can be overwhelming, and so encourages repeat visits, each with its own rewards, from the coconut-milk-free, slow-burn jungle curry to the horizon-expanding crispy watercress salad (for which the green is battered and fried, topped with cashews and dried chiles) to piles of spicy fermented Isan sausage. Lemongrass Chicken Recipe Video by YumYum
I found this website looking for a pad thai recipe using konjac noodles. I made this recipe and it’s actually better than most pad thai I’ve eaten at thai restaurants. I added in some lemongrass and made mine with chicken, shrimp, and tofu. VERY good. I have since also tried another recipe from your blog – the super fudgey brownies and also my favorite brownie recipe! Thanks!

A mild, tamer twist on Tom Yum, this iconic soup infuses fiery chilies, thinly sliced young galangal, crushed shallots, stalks of lemongrass and tender strips of chicken. However unlike its more watery cousin, lashings of coconut milk soften its spicy blow. Topped off with fresh lime leaves, it's a sweet-smelling concoction, both creamy and compelling. Named for the northern Thai staple of every meal, Sticky Rice makes few concessions to Western palates—traditional tamarind-laden stewed pork curry is a standout, while herbaceous house-made sausages, banana blossom salad, and larb made authentically with ground pork and intestine anchor the huge menu. Adventurous diners seeking a true taste of Thai street food will appreciate the insect dishes, from fried worms to ant omelettes, though tamer items like coconut curry khao soi will satisfy the bug-averse. Don’t forget to BYOB.
We dropped in for lunch and it was a delicious surprise with excellent food. The Tom Yom soup is delicious. The spice was perfect for level 2. Their pad Thai was excellent. The chicken satay was well done and I could taste that the peanut sauce is homemade. They have a unique dish Malay vegetable. You may not find it in other Thai places. Loved the taste. They seemed busy with crowd so the wait was little longer than expected. But for a small mom and pop shop, that is understandable with a big party there. Enjoy your food there. The key in this recipe, look at the photos closely is how thinly the chicken is cut. It isn’t about cutting the chicken into fajita sized strips, this is about cutting them to the shape of a very thin matchbook. This makes chicken pieces that are so tender that they are so easy to chew through. The reason the chicken is so tender is because you are cutting the chicken against the grain. This means instead of chicken you’re use to pulling apart in recipes like BBQ Pulled Chicken, this cuts across those muscle fibers so it’s like a group of super thin pieces of chicken instead of a long piece of a single cut of meat.

We have the kids for a few more days this week before they go back to their family, and I honestly thought I wouldn’t see the inside of a kitchen for the rest of the time that they were with us, but somehow, during these last few days, I’ve army-crawled my way back into the kitchen to fight something delicious into existence which feels like a major personal and professional win. I even found it in me to eat this Rainbow Vegetarian Pad Thai for dinner the other night while feeding the kids some leftover pizza and apples. YES I KNOW. I rose to that level of Adult Eating Adult Food.

Papaya salad is a pretty popular dish that many Thai food aficionados tend to gravitate towards. And understandably so! The typical som tam which is usually found in Thai restaurants is sweet and spicy, sour and refreshing, and contains nutty and crunchy elements. But the version most people overlook contains phu pala, or fermented crab, which adds a whole other element of flavor. Som tam phu pala still contains the fresh, crisp papaya you crave in a som tam dish but it’s paired with pungent, salty, and fishy crab that will no doubt convince you to order a second round.

Just American enough to understand your gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, local micro-brew, and 90-point wine requirements, but just Thai enough to bring spice like a chamber music concerto, delicate and dancing, Naviya’s is the Thai restaurant that occupies that very unusual Venn diagram where cool, healthy, romantic, and authentically Thai meet. 2812 W. 43rd St., Mpls., 612-276-5061, naviyas.com Mango Tree - Thai Restaurant in Belgravia, Central London
Book a table on the phone or ask for a table by saying “We’d like a table for 5, please.” This will let the waiter know how many people to expect. The waiter might ask “How many people are in your party?” In this question ‘party’ means ‘group’ not ‘celebration’. If you’re in a country where people are allowed to smoke in restaurants, the waiter might ask if you’d like to sit in the smoking or non-smoking section. If you’re in a hot country, the waiter may ask if you’d prefer to sit indoors or outdoors. Make it clear exactly where you want to sit for a perfect meal.
Dave Tewasart and Justin Baey are going strong at Grand Central Market’s Thai stall, where classic streetside fare like grilled chicken (gai yang) gets cooked sous-vide before being finished on the grill. On the other side of the stand, Sticky Rice Too is Tewasart’s answer to all the requests for noodles. The broth on the khao soi is bold, rich and slightly sweet comfort food that’s a gutsy take on the dish. The pad thai might be some of the best in the city.

This ethnic grocery’s teeny kitchen specializes in palate-awakening heat. Choose among five spice levels (from “mild” to “1,000 peppers”), and make any necessary adjustments at the table stocked with fiery condiments. The choices here include bowls of kee mao (rice noodles spiked with basil, cherry tomatoes, and chili sauce); preserved duck egg curry; and shredded papaya salad with crab, made Thai style (sweet and sour with peanuts, dried shrimp, and cherry tomatoes) or Laos style (meaning with galvanic bursts of southern Thai fish sauce). Most dishes ring in under $8, making Asia Market’s homespun setting all the more satisfying.

The food at this industrial-chic spot pushes the boundaries — specifically the northern boundary of Thailand, with its Lao influence. Forget pad thai; here, customers find fermented pork ribs, jerky and sausage, and rotisserie-cooked game hen. The ultimate order may just be kor moo yahng (grilled pork collar) plus som tum (green papaya salad, Isan-style with pickled crab and anchovies) and the perfect side of sticky rice. Thai brunch anyone? Otus is actually the second iteration of a once-popular Thai spot called Kinaree that burned down a few years back. But don’t cry too many tears - Otus is much better. The space is modern, and while the food across the board is great, the breakfast/brunch situation is what really sets it apart. The Kai-Kata (Thai-style eggs and sweet sausage served in a skillet) is fantastic and comes with a cup of Thai coffee. Hangover bonus: Breakfast is served all day.

LA has a number of vegan Thai restaurants, and for the most part, they’re terrible. Save for Araya’s Place. The Beverly Grove strip mall joint started in Seattle, and has been around for almost 30 years. And while we’ll always prefer our curry with meat, we’d be lying if we said we didn’t think about their avocado curry more than we probably should. The green curry itself is outstanding, but the avocado mixes so well with it, you wonder why more people don’t serve it. If you’re a vegan, you can’t get much better than this place. And if you’re not, the statement still stands.
Another Queens pioneer, Chao Thai is toward the literal end of “hole-in-the-wall” when it comes to atmosphere, but the food has seriously held its own for years now, and the chef-owner, Ratchanee Sumpatboon, has made her mark by expanding all over the city (see Lan Larb Soho and Zabb Elee, below), scattering spicy specialties from her native Isan in her wake.

In a wok or large stockpot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and stir-fry 15 seconds. Add the shrimp and stir-fry 2 to 3 minutes or just until pink and opaque. Add the tofu and toss until lightly coated with oil. Add the eggs and scramble. Fold in the softened noodles, fish sauce, vinegar, 1/4 cup water, brown sugar, and paprika and toss for about 2 minutes or until well combined. Add the scallions and bean sprouts and heat through. Pile onto a large platter and garnish with the red pepper, peanuts, and wedges of lime.
Lovely Day isn’t the most authentic Thai, but at least they aren’t pretending to be. Sure, there’s a seared tuna sushi roll on the menu, but this is always a charming spot for a casual meal with friends. Also, the vibes are good, and it’s probably the cheapest dinner you can have in the Nolita area that still feels like a “fun night out.” Get the green curry, the hobo noodles, and the ginger fried chicken. If you want something more intimate, there’s also a bar downstairs that serves the food. The host probably won’t tell you about it when you ask for a table, but now you’re in the know. Toluca Lake is best known as that place where thousands of sad adults walk around on their lunch hour wondering if they’ll ever make the leap out of the corporate studio world. But it should also be known for something else - The Rustic Spoon. One of the most criminally overlooked Thai spots in LA, Rustic Spoon seems like just another filler restaurant from the outside, but inside they are serving healthy, affordable, and truly tremendous Thai food. This isn’t the most authentic menu in town, but the cinnamon chicken curry with roti bread is so special, we’d drive here at any time of day for it.

Probably due to the fact it sounds like an all-girl group from Calabasas with a noon start time at Coachella, Summer Buffalo doesn’t really get the credit it deserves. But make no doubt about it, this place is great. And with locations in Burbank and on Melrose, it serves two areas largely in need of some quality Thai food. Nahm was the first Thai eatery ever awarded a Michelin Star, a prestigious honor which it held for nearly a decade before losing last year. I’m not sure why, since I ate at Nahm again two months ago and it was as good and well run as ever, but Michelin can be quite fickle. Not that it matters - you should not go to Nahm for this increasingly unimportant distinction, but rather because it is both excellent and truly unique.

A great local beer list and Supatra Johnson, the friendliest Thai chef in Minnesota, make Supatra one of those restaurants you go to twice and immediately consider part of your family. Kris Yenbamroong isn’t trying to recreate analogues of ordinary Thai food; for that, there’s a host of other places that do a better job conveying the experience as one would in Thailand. No, what the Larb King is doing is communicating Thai culture through ingredients more prevalent Stateside (and in the case of necessary components like spice mixes for his famous larb, he’ll just go bring them from Thailand himself). For instance, a dish like kor moo yang might manifest itself as "pork toro," the marinated pork jowl grilled until the ends slightly curl into little caramelized bits, or a succulent grilled pork shoulder that’s been treated with turmeric overnight and grilled to melting-tender perfection.

Are you sick of those wide rice noodles yet? (No.) "These are basically pan-fried rice noodles with egg, Chinese broccoli, and your protein of choice," says Tila. The star ingredient is what sets this dish apart from laad na: a sweet soy sauce made with molasses. "It's nice and dark, with a sweet-salty balance." In fact, Tila thinks this dish is a shining example of the inherent complexity of Thai food. "I don't think that Americans have made Thai food too sweet—it's just that the spice and acid are often missing. And anyway, if it's not a little sweet it's not authentically Thai." This dish often hits the bullseye. Mean Streets (And The Odd South Indian And Thai Restaurant)
Tried Panang curry and stir fried Mango Paradise. Definitely get the mango dish, very good. Properly cooked vegetables were crisp and flavoursome, sauce amazing. The Panang curry is more coconut milky spicy curry sauce than anything else, so be prepared to eat a lot of rice with that one. I liked it, just know what you are in for with the curry option.

Most vegetarians would be pretty angry if they found out after eating that their meal contained fish sauce. I would personally consider it on par with using chicken/beef broth. I’ve seen a recipe for vegetarian fish sauce (http://veganmiam.com/recipes/vegan-fish-sauce) and I’ve personally just swapped it out for low sodium soy sauce or a touch of miso in other recipes.
