If only the word “cafeteria” more often described places like this one, where food is ordered by pointing to unlabeled sections of a steam table, à la rice-curry stalls and shops in Thailand. Combos feature two or three dishes plus rice. You never know what you’re going to get but you can be sure it will be delicious, from super-spicy curries to stewed pork belly with tofu.
One of the traditional takeout things about chicken stir fries is how they have chicken that looks like it was almost shaved, similar to Mongolian Beef in restaurants. The trick to this is to freeze the chicken for about one hour. Once you do you can very easily slice the chicken very thinly against the grain. Add another tablespoon of oil to the pan. Drain the noodles – they should be softened by now. Add the noodles to the hot pan and stir fry for a minute, using tongs to toss. I have something to confess: I’m not a fan of ripe mangoes, and therefore usually avoid the quintessential Thai dessert, mangoes with sweet sticky rice, but I love ruam mit. Ruam means “gathering” and mit roughly translates to “friends,” and it is a dish that is good to share. Ruam mit is essentially a delicious dessert gazpacho. It’s comprised of a sweet coconut milk broth that that has sliced jackfruit, toddy palm seeds, pandan and coconut jelly, and crunchy water chestnuts coated in tapioca flour all served over ice. It’s the perfect way to cap off a spicy meal.

This is a favorite in my family, and for good reason. It’s a fried rice dish that’s been tossed together with kapit -- fermented ground shrimp and salt -- until the aromatic shrimp paste coats the entirety of the rice. Whatever you do, don’t sleep on the yam pla-duk fu, a salad of firm-fleshed young mango (or sometimes green papaya) with a lime dressing and ground catfish that’s been deep-fried into crunchy, wispy bits of fish. It’s one of Queens’ most thrilling dishes. Chao does have range beyond Thai-style salads. To begin, there’s crispy pork belly with Chinese broccoli and oyster sauce, and khao kha moo, that famous Bangkok street dish of stewed pork leg over rice. Here, the gravy is lip-smackingly thick, the tender meat best dipped in the nam pla prik that comes with it, and the rice fluffy.

We tried a variety of dishes including lagoustines with lime and mint, cumin flavored lamb skewers, stir fried squid with garlic and chives and Burmese style ginger and beef cheek curry. Charlie and Nan Niyomkul helm Nan Thai Fine Dining and its sibling, Tamarind Seed Bistro, and in 2010 their daughter Dee Dee and her husband opened Tuk Tuk, which focuses on Bangkok street food, a tribute to her street-vending grandmother. I love pad thai and it is such a hassle to have to dine out every time I get a craving and let’s face it, the meal kits from the grocery store are not good. I decided to learn to make it and chose this recipe based on the “amazing” and “easy” comments, and it did not disappoint! So good and if you have any leftover, it’s even better the next day! Having received rave reviews for their east-end pop up two years ago, Chef Andy Oliver and business partner Tom George found a permanent location for Som Saa just down the road from Spitalfields Market. Som Saa, in an airy, former warehouse with exposed brick, has a buzzy atmosphere and hurrah, despite being on the edge of hipster Hoxton, the music is very cool but not too loud. We opted for the tasting menu which proved to be an excellent choice with mu hong, a southern style soy braised pork belly, as one of the highlights.

To tame the fire, order a bottle of pét-nat, a natural sparkling wine. Close your eyes and taste—you could easily be in Chiang Rai.

If you cannot eat certain things because of your religion or health, check the menu carefully. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are usually marked but if not you can point at the dish on the menu and ask the waiter “Does this contain meat/nuts/dairy?” to find out if it’s OK for you to eat. Or, when the waiter gives you the menu, you can say “I can’t eat _____, which dishes would you recommend for me?”

You might not have ever seriously considered which red wine you should be having with your bowl of green curry before, but Same Same is here to change that. Located in a dark Silver Lake strip mall, Same Same took the place of a well-run neighborhood Thai restaurant and converted it into a casual wine bar. Add the remaining oil to the wok and toss in the garlic, shallots, and chile; stir-fry for 30 seconds. Push the garlic and shallots to 1 side of the wok and pour the egg into the center. Scramble the egg lightly until set, breaking it up into pieces with a spatula. Add the drained noodles to the wok, stirring and tossing quickly with 2 spatulas to separate the strands.
