Kitchen 79, on the border of Jackson Heights and Elmhurst and decorated a bit like a tidy, high-end nightclub (lots of black-and-white leather and glitzy light fixtures), is an excellent place to retrain your palate by familiarizing yourself with classics like gaeng tai pla — a deeply fishy, insanely fiery (not for everyone, but catnip for some) mackerel-based curry bobbing with curls of shrimp, tender cubes of pumpkin, and half-globes of barely crunchy Thai eggplant. Pad ped moo pah, which features wild boar sautéed in spicy curry paste with bamboo, basil, and sprigs of young peppercorn, is an antidote to pork-belly fatigue — it’s nearly as rich, but significantly meatier and bears a subtle gamy tang.

Don't let the exterior fool you or think that Cle Elum can't offer excellent Thai food. Jenny the owner greeted me and enthusiastically customized my dinner to perfection. When noodles are soft enough (but still slightly harder than al dente pasta), rinse them in cold water and drain. Make sure all of your ingredients are set up and divided into equal portions. Note: You’re cooking one portion at a time. Add 2 tbsp. oil to a wok or large non-stick pan. Heat on medium-high, until very hot. Add chicken (if using) and cook for 1 min, then add tofu and garlic. Cook for about 45 secs, stirring frequently. Garlic should now be brown. Stir in noodles, then add 3 tbsp. of sauce mixture. Coat noodles and meat well and stir vigorously to keep noodles from sticking. After about 2 mins, taste noodles to check if they’re soft enough. If not, add 2-3 tbsp. of water and continue to cook for a little longer.

Thai Patio does not have the best food on this list. However, it has something that almost nobody else does - an atmosphere that’s essentially the afterparty from the one you just came from. What do they taste like? Shirataki noodles are actually taste-less and will take on the flavors of the dish. Texture-wise is where they vary, as they are more rubbery than your traditional noodles. And tbh, we’re not fans of using them outside the realms of Asian cuisine. But given that the rice noodles used in pad Thai are also on the chewy-side, shirataki noodles do work quite well here. And in our book, definitely worth a try.

Crying Tiger is a tiny take-out window a few feet off of Hollywood Blvd. and, at first glance, seems like another decent drunk food option for everyone stumbling out of the bars. I live in Ellensburg but have been there several times. A friend lives in Cle Elum. I love the food but the service is not always the greatest. I think she hires people without much experience in food service. Sometimes the service is good, other times not so great. I owned a restaurant years ago. It isn’t about cutting the chicken into fajita sized strips, this is about cutting them to the shape of a very thin matchbook. This makes chicken pieces that are so tender that they are so easy to chew through. The reason the chicken is so tender is because you are cutting the chicken against the grain. A prawn dish of gung pao nahm phrik mapraow, was a first course with an unexpected kick to it at the end. “A native Thai woman made this for a Thai cooking class. This is how she learned to make it from her mother. We tasted the dish and it was great. We did not have Pad Thai sauce with it but she said the store bought type was fine. Vegetables or tofu may be substituted for the chicken. She noted that overcooked noodles do not stir-fry well and do not look good. If using fresh noodles, instead of dried, they will cook in less than 1 minute.”

The food at Up Thai isn’t the on the level of the stuff you want to travel for, but on the Upper East Side, it gets no better. Delivery is tempting, but many of the best things won’t travel well (and the dining room isn’t a bad place to spend some time). So DVR that episode of The Bachelorette and get yourself a table. Order the chicken larb, the whole red snapper, and the crispy duck with tamarind sauce. If you’re really into seafood, get a Thai bouillabaisse, which is a thing here.

What the people over at Night + Market (and its equally fantastic Silver Lake location) have been doing for the past few years is nothing short of incredible. The food is both traditional (grandma’s old recipes are still being used) and continuously pushing the envelope. And the atmosphere is one giant, beautiful party.
