There’s a weeknight menu of fusion-y bar food, like a huge bowl of airy chicharrónes with a sweet-and-funky sauce, which is fine. (Along with the bar, they now run Pata Café, a daytime establishment with bubble tea, American snacks, and Thai dishes like num tok beef salad.) The food to seek out, though, are the noodles served by co-owner Satika “Cherry” Kanchanamusik on weekend afternoons until it runs out. Since opening a couple of years back, Paet Rio has steadily improved and become one of the more reliable restaurants in this exceedingly crowded scene. Like Khao Kang and chicken specialist Eim Khao Mun Kai, a neighborhood favorite, its design is modern and heavy on wood. With its leather cushions, brick walls, and Edison lightbulbs, it looks the part of the hip restaurant slinging, say, confit kao soy chicken and pad Thai fritters. But it’s nothing of the sort. There’s a lot on offer, so home in on the robust selection of noodles and noodle soups: khanom chin nam-ngiao, fermented rice noodles in a thick, gravylike tomato-and-pork sauce; rich kao soy, served with crispy noodles thicker than standard and a well-cooked drumstick; and sukiyaki, a Bangkok mom-and-pop dish offered both as a soup and dry dish. As for the latter, it comes with pork and is seared to almost smokiness, tangled greens, crunchy stems, and an irresistible, tomato-y sauce that’s equal parts sweet and savory. If you expect to be treated as someone who knows the least bit about Thai food, the only answer to “Have you been to Sripraphai?” is a resounding “Yes.” The many-paged menu, with dishes both familiar and unusual from all over the country, can be overwhelming, and so encourages repeat visits, each with its own rewards, from the coconut-milk-free, slow-burn jungle curry to the horizon-expanding crispy watercress salad (for which the green is battered and fried, topped with cashews and dried chiles) to piles of spicy fermented Isan sausage.

I have something to confess: I’m not a fan of ripe mangoes, and therefore usually avoid the quintessential Thai dessert, mangoes with sweet sticky rice, but I love ruam mit. Ruam means “gathering” and mit roughly translates to “friends,” and it is a dish that is good to share. Ruam mit is essentially a delicious dessert gazpacho. It’s comprised of a sweet coconut milk broth that that has sliced jackfruit, toddy palm seeds, pandan and coconut jelly, and crunchy water chestnuts coated in tapioca flour all served over ice. To reduce domestic rice consumption, the Thai government under Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram promoted eating noodles instead. His government promoted rice noodles and helped to establish the identity of Thailand. As a result, a new noodle called sen chan (named after Chanthaburi Province) was created. Every other restaurant in the area spent half their original budget on custom matchbooks and artisanal neon signs, but Lan Larb is fine doing its own thing. If you’re looking for delivery, they’ll bring some very good curry or noodles to your office or home. The restaurant isn’t good for any kind of occasion that calls for ambiance, but, if you just need good food, stop in and try some of their Isan regional specialties, like larb (ground meat salad) or Thai sausage. Greyhound Cafe in Fitzrovia has a loud, young clientele but the Bangkok street food more than makes up for the slightly hectic atmosphere. And there is a large outdoor patio to escape to when the London weather permits. Popular Phad Thai is on offer here too but with an interesting twist of seared scallops instead of prawns or chicken. Stopped here with friends after a Sunday hike. The first thing I noticed was the prices which seem a little on the high side for Cle Elum. No matter. We sit and order Tom Yum soup as a starter. Server warns us about the spice levels. We order our entrees. Food took a while to come out, and Tom Yum did not come as a starter, but instead with the entrees. Service was pleasant but erratic; we had to ask for place settings, and several times for more water. The Tom Yum was actually good, but a little too spicy. Unfortunately, our entrees were SO spicy that the flavor was completely overpowered! And the food was very greasy and slightly odd - too many onions in my 3* fried rice; strangely long carrot strips on my friend's 4* pad thai. I only ate about half of my fried rice; my friend ate one bite of her pad thai. My other friend finished his 2* mango chicken only out of sheer hiker hunger. We paid, left, and went across the street to Dairy Queen for chicken strips and a burger. As much as I wanted to like this place (and for there to be options in Cle Elum), we will not be back and I will not be recommending it to others. I don't think ordering zero stars would help. Pailin isn’t the most well-known name in Thai Town, and its dime-sized space (there are maybe eight tables total inside) isn’t going to jump out at you while driving down Hollywood Blvd. But it’s delicious. In my opinion, the key to making great Pad Thai is to prep all your ingredients and lay them out nicely before beginning to cook, a.k.a. mis en place. Pad Thai is a quick stir-fry so you don’t want to measure out ingredients while you’re cooking. Another challenge for us was to find the perfect Thai ingredients, particularly tracking down the right tamarind concentrate. Most were either too sweet, too salty or not flavorful enough. We found one with 85% tamarind and only 15% water, nothing else in there. So try to find a similar concentration of tamarind without any extra additives. Heat the oil in a large wok or non-stick skillet over high heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and mostly cooked through (about 3-4 minutes). Stir in the ginger, garlic, and shallots and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant. Add the carrots and bell pepper and cook for 1-2 minutes, until tender crisp. Push all the ingredients over to one side of the pan. Pour the beaten egg and scramble directly in the skillet.
This cake was such a hit not everyone at the pot luck got to try it! Folks found it to be “not too sweet” and “with a delightful crumb.” The flavor is excellent and while I used Meyer Lemons, I would try it next with blueberries. You can’t go wrong with Thai noodle soups. They’re flavorful, customizable, and good to the last drop. Although boat noodles -- a pork and beef dish flavored with spices and fresh blood -- are typically the most popular of the noodle soup dishes in Thailand (and worth trying if you’ve yet to have it!), I’d also suggest slurping up a bowl of kuay tiew phet, or duck noodle soup. The broth gets its warm flavor from a blend of cinnamon, star anise, and five spice and delights when the duck has the perfect ratio of meat to fat. I prefer my bowl to contain flat, large rice noodles but the best part about Thai noodle soups is that you can choose your favorite style whether you like vermicelli, egg noodles, or glass noodles.
This little International District shop keeps things simple indeed, opening only on weekdays and serving almost exclusively curry. Oh, there are noodles and a couple of other dishes, but diners should take inspiration from the name of the restaurant and go with one of the curries on offer. The only choice left to be made then is whether to add homemade hot sauce for more heat.

I live in Ellensburg but have been there several times. A friend lives in Cle Elum. I love the food but the service is not always the greatest. I think she hires people without much experience in food service. Sometimes the service is good, other times not so great. I owned a restaurant years ago. There are times when I wanted to get up and just help with serving the tables. I don't think I have ever seen more than one person serving. We have always gone for lunch so it may be different at dinner. Will continue to go back for the food and friendliness.

No, what the Larb King is doing is communicating Thai culture through ingredients more prevalent Stateside (and in the case of necessary components like spice mixes for his famous larb, he’ll just go bring them from Thailand himself). For instance, a dish like kor moo yang might manifest itself as "pork toro," the marinated pork jowl grilled until the ends slightly curl into little caramelized bits, or a succulent grilled pork shoulder that’s been treated with turmeric overnight and grilled to melting-tender perfection. Stopped here with friends after a Sunday hike. The first thing I noticed was the prices which seem a little on the high side for Cle Elum. No matter. We sit and order Tom Yum soup as a starter. Server warns us about the spice levels. We order our entrees. Food took a while to come out, and Tom Yum did not come as a starter, but instead with the entrees. Service was pleasant but erratic; we had to ask for place settings, and several times for more water. The Tom Yum was actually good, but a little too spicy. Unfortunately, our entrees were SO spicy that the flavor was completely overpowered! And the food was very greasy and slightly odd - too many onions in my 3* fried rice; strangely long carrot strips on my friend's 4* pad thai. I only ate about half of my fried rice; my friend ate one bite of her pad thai. My other friend finished his 2* mango chicken only out of sheer hiker hunger. We paid, left, and went across the street to Dairy Queen for chicken strips and a burger. As much as I wanted to like this place (and for there to be options in Cle Elum), we will not be back and I will not be recommending it to others. I don't think ordering zero stars would help. One of the traditional takeout things about chicken stir fries is how they have chicken that looks like it was almost shaved, similar to Mongolian Beef in restaurants. The trick to this is to freeze the chicken for about one hour. Once you do you can very easily slice the chicken very thinly against the grain. Since the slices are so thin you’ll find that even though it was in the freezer, it will come back to a good cooking temperature very quickly.

Thai brunch anyone? Otus is actually the second iteration of a once-popular Thai spot called Kinaree that burned down a few years back. But don’t cry too many tears - Otus is much better. The space is modern, and while the food across the board is great, the breakfast/brunch situation is what really sets it apart.
