Roll into Thai Patio at 3am on a Saturday night, and you’ll be greeted with 100 other late-night revelers. The broth on the khao soi is bold, rich and slightly sweet comfort food that’s a gutsy take on the dish. The pad thai might be some of the best in the city.
This cake was such a hit not everyone at the pot luck got to try it! Folks found it to be “not too sweet” and “with a delightful crumb.” The flavor is excellent and while I used Meyer Lemons, I would try it next with blueberries. Like Khao Kang and chicken specialist Eim Khao Mun Kai, a neighborhood favorite, its design is modern and heavy on wood. With its leather cushions, brick walls, and Edison lightbulbs, it looks the part of the hip restaurant slinging, say, confit kao soy chicken and pad Thai fritters. But it’s nothing of the sort. There’s a lot on offer, so home in on the robust selection of noodles and noodle soups: khanom chin nam-ngiao, fermented rice noodles in a thick, gravylike tomato-and-pork sauce; rich kao soy, served with crispy noodles thicker than standard and a well-cooked drumstick; and sukiyaki, a Bangkok mom-and-pop dish offered both as a soup and dry dish. As for the latter, it comes with pork and is seared to almost smokiness, tangled greens, crunchy stems, and an irresistible, tomato-y sauce that’s equal parts sweet and savory. Crying Tiger is a tiny take-out window a few feet off of Hollywood Blvd. and, at first glance, seems like another decent drunk food option for everyone stumbling out of the bars. But Crying Tiger is much, much more. First off, it’s operated by the Luv2Eat people, so expect flavors and spice to be intense. Secondly, their menu goes far beyond a solid bowl of pad thai. Since we rarely need (or can find) tamarind, we skipped it in the sauce. To make up for it's sourness, we added lime juice. Kai jeow is the unsung hero of Thailand. Every Thai kid has grown up on this wok fried omelette, which can be stuffed with a variety of ingredients. The two fillings I love most are the moo sab -- garlicky, peppery ground pork -- or nam -- a sour, fermented Thai sausage. The trick to getting a perfect kai jeow is cook over very high heat, resulting in a crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside egg dish. You’ll never be able to go back to regular omelettes after this.
Students in particular swarm to this intimate U District restaurant for the handful of savory offerings that range from the mellow khao mun gai, with its poached chicken over ginger rice, to the fiery pad krapow gai kai dao, with its minced chicken, Thai basil, and chiles. Not spicy enough? Bold diners can request the signature super hot sauce, with knowledge that cooling relief from the heat will come from the shaved ice desserts with an assortment of tropical toppings.
Amidst all the chaos of Grand Central Market, you might miss Sticky Rice at first. But inside this food stall in the center of the market is a fantastic secret. And that secret is the best beef panang curry in the city. The rest of the menu is pretty great too, but something in that curry speaks to us unlike anything else. It’s sweet, savory, and a little spicy, and the braised beef is so tender that chewing is optional.
Although today we associate Pad Thai sauce with tamarind, in this authentic southern-Thai recipe, the sourness comes instead from a combination of rice vinegar and lime juice. Several hundred years ago, traditional Pad Thai was made in just this way—without tamarind—and versions of this original recipe can still be found in various regions of Thailand.
